5 Common Car Problems and How to Fix Them

Even with regular maintenance, cars can develop issues over time. Knowing how to identify and fix common problems can save you time and money. Here are five common car problems and how to address them.

1. Dead Battery

A dead battery is one of the most common reasons a car won’t start. If you turn the key and hear clicking sounds or nothing at all, your battery might be dead.
Fix: Jump-start the car using jumper cables and another vehicle. If the battery frequently dies, consider replacing it.

2. Flat Tire

A sudden flat tire can be frustrating, especially when driving. Causes include punctures, worn-out tread, or improper inflation.
Fix: Replace the flat tire with a spare or use a tire repair kit for minor punctures. Regularly check tire pressure to prevent flats.

3. Overheating Engine

An overheating engine can cause severe damage if ignored. It often happens due to low coolant levels, a malfunctioning radiator, or a faulty thermostat.
Fix: Pull over immediately, turn off the engine, and let it cool down. Check coolant levels and refill if necessary. If overheating persists, consult a mechanic.

4. Check Engine Light On

The check engine light can indicate anything from a loose gas cap to a serious engine issue.
Fix: Use an OBD-II scanner to diagnose the issue or visit a mechanic for a proper inspection. Address minor problems like a loose gas cap or replace faulty components as needed.

5. Brake Problems

Soft or squeaky brakes can be a sign of worn-out brake pads or low brake fluid levels.
Fix: Inspect the brake pads and replace them if worn out. Check brake fluid levels and top up if needed. If braking issues persist, get a professional inspection.
